Good day.
We are nearing the end of our Numbers Sense unit of study in Math. The students have been learning all the ways we can make numbers from 5 to 20. They needed to show pictures, numbers, words, and tallies. Today, we examined the number 13 and shared 13 ways to make 13! They found that interesting.
This leads us into adding and subtracting up to 10 for now. The learning goals for this unit are:

This leads us into adding and subtracting up to 10 for now. The learning goals for this unit are:
- learn more about the meaning of numbers
- recognize that addition involved joining groups and that subtraction involves taking one group away from another
- use counters and other real-life materials to help solve simple number problems
- practise using addition and subtraction to write and solve number problems
- describe the thinking involved in solving simple number problems
The students are learning that numbers represent people, things, and ideas. They represent how much and how many.
We continue to study our words of the week, using them in sentences, with rainbow colours, stepping, and cut/paste.
We are learning a lot about dinosaurs and why they no longer exist. Soon, there will be a project for them to research and present their understanding of the environment, diet, and enemy of a chosen dinosaur.
Today, the students took home a letter they will be reading in other classes on Monday. They are to practice reading this letter at least four times to be ready for Monday. They are to be confident. I will be placing them in groups of 3 representing our class and this awesome community project. Thank you for helping them prepare.
