Dear Parents:

We started our Outrageously Organized Unit of Study. Thus far, we have worked on Birthday Invitations and the information needed for guests to attend. This unit finishes January 23. Seeing that school starts up again January 7, we will have 7 40-minute time periods to work on a project showcasing the students’ understanding of being organized. In light of this, we will do a project focused on the food groups - Grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat and alternatives. They need 5 pictures each for all of these groups. These pictures will be used to plan four menus for four meals. They will glue the pictures on plate templates on posters so the pictures should be big, colourful, printed from Google Images and/or grocery flyers. The students will need to be able to explain how they know why each item is in that group. They should also know how much of each should be in each meal. They learned this ‘fist and open hand’ portions from Brittany at Zehrs.

During the holidays, please allow your child to print pictures from Google images. They can be coloured pictures or pictures that can be coloured. Thank you for helping to collect the pictures but NOT doing the work for your child. All the organizing, labelling, and gluing will be done in class. I have 65cm x 48cm poster boards here for them to print the title, food group names, label each food, and portion size. You are welcome to google food portion plate templates to know how much of the plate is taken with each food group.

Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to my Grade One Family:

I am humbled by the gifts received from my students and their families. I am rich beyond compare.

We had a fun morning making cards for moms and dads. Then, Gym, Art, and French in succession. We then handed out gifts and read about 5 poems ending with Reindeer Pokey. After the last recess, we did our agendas and math packets.

As a class, we have had a wonderful 4 months. Have a blessed two weeks celebrating Christmas and a safe New Year bringing in 2019.

Good Afternoon:

Today in Math, we looked at three ways to have 10 cents without using dimes. Later in Spelling, we used our white boards and markers to review the spelling of both sets of words. The students did quite well at this challenge. Then we had fun drawing a stuck truck, pig in a pot, and trick or treat.

In our Unit, we discussed the upcoming project of collecting pictures of 5 foods for 4 food groups the students will need in January. They will be assembling four meals with these choices. All the work will be done in class with posters, pencils, markers, scissors, and glue.

Don't forget tomorrow is Casual Day.

Christmas Concert Day!

Today, we did our usual morning routine of message, poem, and Calendar Wall. The students are finishing sooner so now they have 15-20 minutes of reading.

In Math, we talked about time, which activity takes longer - zipping a jacket or reading a book. Then, they drew the hour hand on clocks. After this, time permitting, they are doing worksheets regarding skip counting, greater than/less than, and odd/even numbers.

In our Literacy Block, we worked on small Christmas trees that have decorations. During Unit, we worked on Birthday invitations. As per the usual after doing agendas, they did their adding/subtracting packets.

We are excited for our performance and hope you enjoy the poem.

Have a lovely evening celebrating Christmas.

Good Day.

Today and tomorrow, morning assembly is cancelled because the Gym is set up for the Concert. Please ensure your child is in the class by 6:30 tomorrow evening. They should be dressed in their red top and dark pants. They will wear their indoor shoes. Be sure to have their hat here.

We did not have Gym because the Gym is set for the concert. We did some music beats with cubes singing ABC, Twinkle Little Star, and Jingle Bells.

We worked on our Sequencing cut and paste giraffe and fish pictures as well as placing the months in the right order. Later, we glued four pictures of a boy building a snowman then had to write the order in which he built his friend. After that, we worked on Christmas trees and decorations that are 3D.

We will not have Gym tomorrow either because of the concert.

Before afternoon recess, we coloured Christmas trees and decorations which we will cut out, paste and made a 3D tree.

Good evening.

Today, in Math, we looked at activities and events that take place in each season. The students drew pictures in their Math books.

Later, in our Unit, we worked on designing Birthday invitations with place, date, time, RSVP, fake phone numbers, and decorate the front cover. This is to teach students about organizing detail for special events. Guests need to have the 5 w's before they can accept and respond.

Other than that, the students had Gym, Art, and French today.

Have a lovely evening.
