Wow, can you believe January is over!

Next Thursday is 100 days in school. We now have popsicle sticks, q-tips, pom poms, jiggly eyes, and foam shapes. Please, we need 100 of one thing from each child for this to be successful. Thanks for supporting and visiting the dollar store. Let your child do the counting.

We watched another video about inventions - paper, pencils, aeroplanes, telephones, and light bulbs. These are things we use daily and a lot.

Soon, we will talk about our own inventions, materials needed, and why these inventions are important.

We have started a new routine of having two students read a book to the class at the end of the day. They look forward to reading and being read to by fellow students. Hearing two students read is such a thrill.

Have a good evening. Brrrrrrrr! Stay warm.

Greetings:

I am so proud of our students and their willingness to write and memorize speeches presented today. It is nerve wracking and they did very well.

Miss Cranfield was absent so Miss Kiroff and I joined our classes for dodge ball. That was fun.

Don't forget Wednesday is Casual Day!

Today, I introduced two digit by two digit addition, constantly reiterating to start in the one's column then the 10's. This was interesting for them to see numbers greater than 20!

Be safe driving today.

Greetings:

Well, we were in school but it was blistering cold, so indoor recesses.

In Math, we are studying tally, picto and bar graphs. We are also touching a bit on 2 digit by 2 digit adding without regrouping. Reminding the students to always start in the one's column because when they start regrouping, they need to be in the habit.

Our second writing assessment is about a snowy day. In light of yesterday being a Snow Day, I had the students write about it using the 5 W's, and sequence words. It went a bit better with fresh memories. We will visit it again at the end of the term.

For our unit, we watched a video of inventions created by young people. They were very interesting, especially the partial mitten/arm sleeve that you wear under a jacket and mitten, that part of the wrist that is always exposed to the cold air. Smart idea. Also, a plastic tube that holds the halves of crayons so they aren't wasted. Cool.

Anyways, have a lovely evening. Try to stay warm. We will probably have indoor recesses again tomorrow.

It's Friday!!!

Your child has an envelope with the DRA and Math Assessments from Term 2. As a teacher, to see and hear the students reading every day thrills my heart and soul. It is one of the reasons to be in this profession. To see them moving ahead in reading levels means that all the work we - you and me - do in their lives is working and paying off. So, thank you, parents, for reading with them daily and listening to them read as well. What with a morning message, poem, Calendar Wall, stories, Math reading, etc., it is starting to stick in their brains.

Remember, the speeches are Monday 9-10:10. Some are memorized while others are needing review, review, review.

We looked at the last two graphs in our 10 page packet today. I hope this has helped the students understand Data Management and that bar graphs, pictographs, and data tables help read numbers easier.

Thursday, January 24, 2019

Greetings!

Today, we continued on our 10 page package of data tables and pictographs, reading the graphs and orally answering the questions before writing the answers. Students are being sternly reminded they MUST print number sentences when asked 'how many more...' and 'how many total...'

In our Unit, we worked in our groups to list all the things we use in our class that have been invented. We listed about 20-25 items we use daily. How far classrooms have come in 100 years!!!

We are slowly collecting bags of 100 items - q-tips, jiggly eyes, pom poms, and foam shapes. Hundreds Day is February 7.

Good luck listening to speeches as they are being memorized.

Greetings!

Your child may be restless after spending three recesses indoors because of the weather.

Today, they partnered up and read or recited their speeches to each other. They are really good stories! Please, all they will be doing for homework until Monday is memorizing the speeches. Thanks

We started our Inventions Unit today. We listed 30 forms of transportation that have been invented for people by people. We were amazed at the number.

We have pom poms, jiggly eyes, and foam shapes.

Have a safe evening.

Good Evening!

Today, we continue to work with our weekly words. In Math, we did some probability with a graph. After rolling two dice and adding the numbers, which number do you think you will get the most? They had to record the addition sentences then the graph with the answers. This was fun but also disappointing because almost no one rolled what they predicted.

Later, we finished our 4 menus posters. We will start our next unit, Inventions, tomorrow. We need to brainstorm materials objects are made of and why.

Have a super evening.

Monday, January 21, 2019

Greetings!

It was an extremely cold day resulting with indoor recesses.

We followed our usual routine of Calendar Wall and Math. We read and answered questions about bar and pictographs using tallies and numbers. Later, we held our weekly spelling test.

The students wrote a recount of an activity from their weekends accompanied with pictures. The students who have completed their four menus worked on Food Group word searches while those needing to finish worked on their posters.

Please note there are spaces available in the After School Art program with Jada. The students make amazing crafts.

Have a super day.

Friday, January 19, 2019

Greetings:

The students had another fun time at the arena skating with parents and fellow students.

Our menus are almost done. The variety of food choices are very interesting. This has been a challenge for students to ensure at least 3 food groups are on each plate. They will have 2 more days, then we start looking at our next unit, inventions.

I had the students do a Math exercise using addition Scoot cards posted around the class and each student had an answer chart. This proved to be challenging, finding the cards to match the number on the chart, counting and answering the questions. It is a great way to review their addition skills using numbers and pictures.

Have a super weekend listening to speeches!

Greetings:

We worked with spinners in Math for probability, choosing whether red, green or blue - with two quarters of the spinner - would win. This was interesting.

Later, we finished our recount writing about our Skating Trip last Friday. Finally, we worked on our Food Posters. Some are done while others need to catch up.

We look forward to another Skating Expedition tomorrow.

Probability and Data Management

Today, we held a car race. I will let your child describe the details. It is good practice for sequencing.

We continue to work on our meal posters. We need to have this done by next week because we start our next Unit of Inventions. Please, start having your child collect cereal, cracker, kleenex boxes as well as toilet and paper towel rolls, wool, etc. They will have to create an invention. It will be a challenge.

Also, we have two packages of pom poms for 100's day so we don't need more. But we do need mini straws, googlie eyes, popsicle sticks, play coins, letter tiles, etc. The dollar store is a great place to get these things. That will be worked on the first week of February. Thanks

We look forward to Skating on Friday. Please help your child with their speeches. I hope the template helped to organize their thoughts. I apologize if I gave the wrong dates - grade 1 is the Monday and grades 2/3 is the Friday.

Thanks

What a Fun Filled Day:

We worked with our weekly words. We did our Term 2 assessment. Later, we wrote about our Friday Skating expedition. The students had a period to work on their 4 menus. They have maybe 3-4 days left then we move on to inventions.

Talking about inventions, please start keeping empty cereal, kleenex, cracker, etc. boxes, toilet and paper towel rolls, etc. The students will be building a creation that does a specific function.

Speeches:

January 28, 9-10 - grade 1 speeches
February 1 - 9-10 grade 2/3 speeches

Parents are more than welcome to come and listen. Please, stay for the hour and give the other students an audience. They need encouragement. Thanks

Good day.

Today, we previewed the Term 2 Math Assessment. Tomorrow and possibly Wednesday we will complete the assessment.

We also were introduced to our new words of the week:

sad, sat, set, sit, six, sun, sap, sip, sum, sob, bonus - sag, sub

weed, feed, meet, seen, weep, peep, deep, keep, sleep, tree, sheep, green - because this list is already 12 words long, no bonus words.

After the test, we looked at a template that lists the 5 w's for the speeches.

Good day!

Today, we worked with Probability. We repeated the activity from Monday using black and white cubes in paper bags. This time, students wrote their predictions of what they will pull out of the bag the most, black or white, then record the results with marker on their worksheets. They thoroughly enjoyed this activity. It showed that you don't always get the results you expect.

During our Unit period, we continued to work on our menus. We need to finish choosing food items for each meal. Some have started with their posters, printing 'My Menu' at the top.

We are enjoying the posters provided us by a parent. The students coloured the pictures.

Have a lovely evening.

Skate! Skate! Skate!

The students had so much fun today at the arena.

Here are photos from the past week.

We are studying Data Management and Probability and having fun asking fellow students questions and talking about 'maybe', 'certainly', and 'impossible'.

We are working on our Menu Posters, printing the title and organizing each meal.

Try to stay warm this weekend.
