Biome Unit

Hi parents. We are studying Biomes until June 15. In class, we will be creating flip books with a page for each of 6 biomes. The students choose a creature and select three facts about this creature. They will write one of these facts in the book. They also must choose a plant and select three facts about this plant. Again, they will write one of these facts in the book. I look forward to seeing their findings.

Today, we looked at mass and capacity with jars of water. The students had to decide which of the 7 jars had one cup of water. They were shocked to learn that every jar had one cup! This showed them that different size containers will present the water at different levels. 

We also worked with plural nouns. This is not easy to learn. 

I am really looking forward to our Science Carnival tomorrow. It should be fun, educational, and probably messy!

Happy Polar Region!

Today, we watched the Biome video and learned about animals that live in the Polar Regions. There is not a lot of plant life. So, tonight, choose one animal and plant and gather 3 facts for each. These will be used for flip books for the summative assessment. 

In Math, for Mass and Capacity, students worked in groups of three to estimate how many cubes were in cups then decide how best to count them. Turns out, there were about 200 in the cups!

In Language, we had a mock Spelling Bee. Next week, the top two students will be sent to the competition that includes other schools. 

Thank you to the family that provides the ice cream truck. What a wonderful treat!

Terrific Day!

We did our Calendar Wall, then played around the world addition. Following this, we watched Cratt's Creatures because we are now studying Biomes. 

After Gym, we continued to look at singular and plural nouns. Later, we read poems using a tambourine, drum, and tubes for the beat. 

We anticipate a good time at the Science Carnival next Thursday. We are still needing 3 volunteers to help with running the activities. Thanks

The Rain held off! Outdoor Recess!

Today, we continued to work with partners to answer addition word problems using 4 of 7 strategies. This is proving to be challenging but necessary for the future. Soon, we will work on subtraction. 

Later, we examined a painting by Lawren Harris for our final assessment of Art Attack. Today was strictly oral with me scribing for all the students. It was fun and educational for everyone. 

Still later, we watched a Biome video, looking only at Oceans and the mammal, animal and plant life that thrive there. We also started a Habitat Journal, noting one creature from the ocean and one thing we learned.

Pizza Day - always a fun day. 

Today, we continued to work with our partners to answer 4 of 8 addition word problems using 4 of 7 possible strategies to show our thinking and understanding of the question. 

We also do our Minute Math. This is now the highlight of the day.

In Language, we worked with the Spelling Bee words for 15 minutes then with singular and plural nouns - cat, cats, house, houses, woman, women. The spelling of nouns can be difficult to understand. 

In Unit, we started to look at key words regarding Biomes - there are a lot! We also discussed the flipbook we will assemble and use to present our understanding of 6 Biomes, with a fact about an animal and plant from each. We will see numerous videos regarding all aspects of Biomes and Ecosystems.
