Welcome Back after a Lovely 4 Day Thanksgiving Weekend!

We jumped right back into routine, working on our Calendar Wall worksheets. 

Then, we delved into Math, counting fridge objects and printing the digits and words. We also drew objects reflecting 4 different numbers up to 10. 

After this, we had our pre-spelling test. The students brought home Fill-in-the-Box worksheets for the words. We have done this in class so it should be familiar. 

Later, we discussed the rules for Tag, wrote these rules, then revised the rules to design a similar game but with adjusted rules.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today, the PTA graced our school with delicious pumpkin and apple pie and lovely cookies. Thank you to the parents in this group who go above and beyond to make The Maples Academy a fun place to learn and teach.

Today, 9 of our students represented The Maples Academy at the Cross Country Meet. So proud of them!

Almost every morning, we work with the calendar. 


We listened to 4 more presentations of community helpers. So interesting!

We worked with our words of the week, drawing pictures and writing sentences. They also had to box the words.

round letters - a, c, e, i, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x, z
tall letters - b, d, f, h, k, l, t
tail letters - g, j, p, q, y

In the afternoon, we played Chutes and Ladders because there were 6 students in the class.

So, we had our first IB Assembly. Madison earned the Inquirer Aware for being willing to ask questions. October's theme is knowledge. 

As you can see from the pictures, we had a fun time playing a relay game. I will let the students explain the game. They definitely had fun. 

We continue to work with our words of the week, this week focusing on the spelling words. We also worked hard in our Math Centres, whether skip counting, adding, or comparing numbers. 

We also listened to three more presentations about Community Helpers. The students are enthusiastic and informed. 

Tomorrow, 9 students attend the Durham Cross Country Meet. So exciting!

Good afternoon, families!

As per the usual, our day was full. We listened to four students share about teachers, construction workers, lawyers, and firefighters. What a thrill! 

We continue to work with words and sentences. We had our first pre-test in Spelling. We will have the follow up test on Thursday. Tomorrow and Wednesday the students will have opportunity to work with these words - 

bad, bag, bat, bed, big, bit, box, bun, bus, but, bug bet; 

card, yard, hard, far, star, shark, part, smart, start, carpet, warm. 

I have two groups of students. Ask your child which ones they printed and review the spelling of them. 

I am also listening to three students each day read. I thoroughly enjoy listening to the stories and read the story at the end of the day to the whole class. 

In Writing, we listed fruits we enjoy eating. We had 24 fruits! 

In Math, we are at centres. There is no lack of learning in Grade One!

Please note that 9 students will be at the Cross Country Meet Wednesday afternoon. Please, if you have any games such as Snakes and Ladders, UNO, or Connect 4, can we borrow them? Six students will be in class. Thank you.
