Track and Field Day

We had the most perfect weather for the Maples/St. Jude's T&F Day. Kudos go out to Miss Cranfield for organizing both days. Those who participated shone. We cheered and thoroughly enjoyed the time out of class. We also had Birthday Circle.

We did get to look at fractions again. The students are learning they are part of the whole.

We look forward to finishing our video about Biomes next week and researching about the Savannah.

Have a lovely weekend.

Parent Appreciation Day

Thank you, parents, for calling The Maples home. Thank you for entrusting your children to our care to educate in a safe environment.

Today, we started fractions. This is not an easy concept. We looked at parts of the whole and how to write the numbers.

Later, we looked at a Dr. Seuss Book, courtesy of a student in class, about whales. It was chock full of facts.

Have a lovely evening.

Pizza and Casual Day!

Today, we finished our subtraction word problems. We also finished the second page of our spelling word exercises.

We wrote our opinion of a season and drew pictures for them. This is our last assessment of the year.

Later, we listened to our Biome video and learned about the Desert. Tonight, the students choose a creature and plant and three facts for each for their flip book.

We used the stage to practice for the concert which is next week.

Have a lovely evening.

Good evening:

Today, we continued to work with subtraction word problems, using pictures, numbers and words. This can be a challenge as there are three ways to show answers.

Later, we met our new words of the week after a two-week break because of the Spelling Bee.

Cream – long song gong along belong strong thongs tongs – wrong, among, tongue, sponge

Blue - Sort fort sport torn corn born horn cork pork fork – form, short

Still later, we worked with our Biome Flip books. The students need to have pictures of creatures and plants from Ocean, Freshwater, Polar, and Rainforest Regions along with 3 facts for each. We are learning lots of facts.

Have a super evening.

Spelling Bee Day!

Lucas and Taylor did very well, spelling 5 words correctly each.

We looked at subtraction word problems. These are much easier, sometimes, than adding. I presented three different questions with three different strategies. Each student chooses 4 out of 10 questions to answer on a template with boxes for pictures, numbers, and words.

The Spelling Bee started at 10:30 and went into our Lunch period so we did not have Spelling. We wrote an opinion on whether we prefer ice cream cones or sundaes. Our last assessment is Wednesday when students share their opinion of their favourite season.

We practiced our dance for the concert, knowing it is next week. We also watched the Biome video featuring the Rainforest. Tonight, students choose one creature and plant and gather three facts for each.

Have a great evening researching the Rainforest.

Good afternoon!

Today, we finished our addition word problems using pictures, numbers, and words to show groups or sets of things.

We also finished our nouns package looking at singular and plural nouns learning that rules are always broken in our language - one dish, two dishes, one fish, two fish.

We practiced our dance for the concert coming up in June. At the end of the day, we read a silly book called 'Penguinaut'.

Have a lovely weekend.

Book Fair and Track Meet!

We had a most fantastic day at school. The Book Fair, organized and run with the help of the PTA is much appreciated by staff and students alike. To be gifted with beautiful books for the classroom is a dream for teachers. 'Sloth at the Zoom' by Helaine Becker and Orbie, 'Follow that Bee' by Scot Ritchie, and 'Meet Chris Hadfield' by Elizabeth McacLeod and Mike Deas are new additions to the Grade One Library. Thank you parents for these gifts.

Our hats off to Miss Cranfield for organizing a fantastic Track and Field Day. The weather was really cold. I thank the parents who participated. They ran several events by measuring, raking, and cheering. The students cheered each other on to the finish line. These photos are courtesy of Mrs. Galasso.

BIG Reminder

June 7 is our second Movie day - The Secret Life of Pets 2. Your child brought home the form. Please fill it out as soon as possible so we can submit the food choices. Thank you.

Today, we reflected about the Science Fair stations and stated our opinion of our favourite one. It brought back great memories of a fun filled day.

Congratulations, Lucas and Taylor, for advancing to the Spelling Bee. It took 55 words before we could announce these students.

We visited the Book Fair. Your child filled out a wish list. It runs today and tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the Track Meet. Students are to wear gym clothes, sunscreen, hats, and have water bottles.
